I Love Delivering Author Talks into Primary Schools!
Let me spark their imagination!
I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to talk to groups of children about my book. In Book Week 2022, I spoke to over 450 students in years 4, 5 and 6 in schools around Melbourne. It was extremely rewarding to discover how engaged the children would be. And they asked me some insightful questions at the end of the sessions!
The sessions include a talk about what inspired me to write, the writing process and how the book came about. I also bring A3 prints of my original illustrations for the children to see. I’ve found these provide a visual focus that the children really enjoy.
A reading from the book follows, leaving a cliffhanger at the end of the first chapter. The response has been amazing and so many of the students have expressed a desire to find out what happens next! Often, with children who struggle with the incentive to read, finding their perfect ‘book match’ will get them started. It may not be my book, but it just could be!
My aim is to instil in every child attending my sessions a desire to read and hopefully to create their own stories.
“France was engaging and pitched her author talk to just the right level for our Grade 4 students. Her willingness to share her own stories of how she became a writer and illustrator of her book, "Skit" was inspirational for our students to hear. France "hooked" our students in when she shared and read aloud a chapter of her book. France Dot was fantastic.”
